Seasoned vs.
Green Firewood

The single most important factor in firewood quality is moisture content. Knowing the difference between seasoned and green wood will save you money and frustration every winter.

✦ Seasoned Firewood (What We Sell)

Properly seasoned wood has been dried to under 20% moisture content. This means it lights easily on the first attempt, burns hot and clean with minimal smoke, and delivers hours of sustained heat. It won't fill your home with smoke or clog your flue with creosote.

All Vic's firewood is seasoned to this standard β€” guaranteed.

βœ— Green Firewood (What to Avoid)

Green wood has not been properly dried. Some hardwoods can have over 50% moisture content when freshly cut β€” making them very difficult to light, slow to burn, and highly smoky. They deliver little useful heat and can damage your flue over time.

If you want to season your own green wood, allow 1–2 years of proper drying time in a covered, ventilated space.

βœ— Cheap Softwood (Pine, etc.)

Pine and other softwoods are the cheapest option but the most expensive in the long run. They burn fast, produce excessive resin and smoke, require constant restocking, and can be a fire hazard. Not worth the saving.

✦ The Right Choice

Quality Australian hardwoods β€” red gum, yellow box, grey gum, iron bark β€” provide the best heat per dollar. They light reliably, burn for hours, and keep your home genuinely warm. This is why Vic's only stocks and delivers hardwood.
